Banh chung makers hurry to welcome Tet

VietNamNet Bridge – As the lunar New Year (Tet) approaches, some suburban villages of Hanoi are very busy making banh chung (square glutinous rice cake) to serve the market.

Banh chung (steamed cake) is a traditional Vietnamese cake which is made from glutinous rice, mung bean, pork and other ingredients. Its origin is told by the legend of Lang Lieu, a prince of the sixth Hung Vuong, who became Hung Vuong’s successor thank to his creation of banh chung and banh day, which symbolized respectively the Earth and the Sky.

Considered an essential element of the family altar on the occasion of Tet, the making and eating banh chung during this time is a well-preserved tradition of Vietnamese people. Beside the Tet holiday, banh chung is also tasted all year round as a delicacy of Vietnamese cuisine and one of the national dishes of Vietnam besides nem ran and pho.

Tranh Khuc village in Duyen Ha commune, Thanh Tri district, Hanoi, produces more than 10,000 banh chung a day.

Most of families in the village produce banh chung to serve the Hanoi market. Normally, each family makes around 300 banh chung a day but for Tet, they have to hire additional workers.

Children are also involved in this traditional trade. They wash edible canna leaves and strip off the ribs.

In cold weather, this woman has to wear gloves to work. She said her family has pursued this trade for several generations.

Banh chung is the symbol of Tet.

At the age of 90, Mrs. Ty still works very hard during these busy days. She said she has done her whole life. “I love this trade very much. I hope my descendants will continue this tradition forever,” Mrs. Ty said.

Tranh Khuc villagers have measured materials very carefully to have up-to-standard banh chung.

Professional banh chung makers don’t need moulds but their cakes are very square and regular.
They can make one banh chung in a minute.

Mrs. Nhan, 73, has also been a banh chung maker since she was a little girl.

Banh chung are boiled by industrial boilers.

Made-in-Vietnam robots dream of going further into the world

VietNamNet Bridge – The year 2010 witnessed an important milestone in Vietnam’s robot industry, when a made-in-Vietnam robot was warmly welcomed in the world market.

Being flexible in operation, doing things quickly and exactly, being able to work in the noxious environment and do everything to replace people all have been cited as the outstanding features of robots. That explains why many countries and enterprises have spent a lot of money to design and manufacture robots.

Vietnam has also encouraged the design and manufacturing of robots by launching scientific research projects to discover ideas and talents for the robot industry. Especially, it has been annually organizing ROBOCON in order to discover a high quality labor force to prepare to help develop the industry in the future.

Ho Vinh Hoang, General Director of TOSY Robot Joint Stock Company, the person who has brought made-in-Vietnam robot to the world, is the designer who has “grown up” from such ROBOCON competitions

To Automatica, the world’s biggest exhibition in this field held in Germany in June 2010, TOSY brought TOPIO, the robot which can play ping-pong. And the appearance of TOPIO immediately caught the special attention from the exhibition’s attendants, because the excellent product comes from Vietnam, a country that has never been known as the robot manufacturer.

Besides TOPIO, TOSY also brought more than ten models of robots which can work in industries and the service sector. TOPIO Dio, the small service robot, which was introduced for the first time, was highly appreciated, because it can operate everywhere thanks to an integrated camera and impediment-inductor.

The exhibition’s attendants were really attracted by the robots made in Vietnam. Many attendants expressed their surprise when hearing that the robots, which have a high efficiency and impressive operation, were made in Vietnam, a country that has never been a big name among the biggest robot manufacturers. Even the “big guys”  in the robot industry in the world were also surprised with the robots from Vietnam, because the robots have the quality that is par with the robots made by modern countries in the world. Meanwhile, the prices of the robots made in Vietnam are just equal to half the price of the robots with the same functions in the market.

Explaining the low production cost, which is considered the most outstanding feature of TOSY-made robots, Hoang said that TOSY undertakes every phrase of the manufacturing process, from setting ideas, designing to carrying out production. A lot of important parts of robots, including the control unit and management software, have been designed and manufactured by TOSY itself. Besides, TOSY also does not have to pay large amounts of money for labor.

The low prices have helped TOSY to sign a lot of valuable contracts.

“It is very difficult to successfully manufacture high-quality and low-cost robots, but it is even more difficult to persuade clients to trust the Vietnamese brand,” Hoang said.

Also according to Hoang, the robots manufactured by TOSY have to satisfy a lot of requirements in quality in order to be distributed by big partners from the US, Japan and Germany.

In its development plan TOSY is considering a lot of factories in the near future that will serve the manufacturing and testingcof new products. “We will not only manufacture industrial robots, we are planning to bring service robots to every family and help improve the life of people,” Hoang said.

Long Bien Bridge – Endless inspiration

VietNamNet Bridge – Once again, the people who live near Hanoi’s oldest bridge – Long Bien became the center of a multinational art project.

The fruits of this project are four experimental documentaries entitled “Long Bien Picture Show” and a collection of over 140 pictures, which were made in three months.

This collection of over 140 photographs and four films came to existence out of a notion that was really more of a non-idea. The purpose was to produce a number of bodies of work in the same place – the Long Bien neighborhood – which did not necessarily have any relationship with one another, except for where they were made.

The four photographers – Barnaby Churchill Steele, Boris Zuliani, Tran Xiu Thuy Khanh and Jamie Maxtone-Graham - and four filmmakers – Tran Thi Anh Phuong, Pham Thu Hang, Do Van Hoang and Tran Thanh Hien - were asked only to create works about thinsg that they responded to as individuals, and in the ways they wanted to.

There has been no effort to create a theme or to impose any meaning, the thought being that the confusion of ideas and perspectives might better reflect the place.

Sponsored by the British Council, The Long Bien Picture Show is based partly on a simple observation of the way people make use of a neighborhood. In Long Bien, like anywhere else, there are as many reasons for people’s lives and livelihoods as there are residents. And all the things that happen in big cities happen here – good things and less good. People are born in Long Bien and others die. Some will spend their whole lives in this area, some want to get there to live somehow, and others are in great need to leave it.

This is, in fact, what people do – they use where they live and work in very unique and specialized and personal ways without any sort of overarching idea of what the meaning of that is. The place simply is and the people are simply there. It is enough to try and show that. How these things are shown – in the same way people find themselves in this place - is the purview of each of the individuals making the record. So, in this place, there are streets with houses and businesses, there are markets, there are families, there are small alleys, there are cars, trucks, motorbikes, bicycles. There are men and there are women. There are children. There are old people and young people too. Here, in the morning the sun comes up and in the evening it gets dark.

Some, or all, of these things showed up in the images and films made over the course of the three months that this group of individuals worked in Long Bien. And then there was always the possibility that the completely unexpected showed up in the frame. This has always been the risk in photography and filmmaking.

The works will be presented at the Goethe Hanoi Institute, 56 Nguyen Thai Hoc Street on January 23.

Seven people die from cold in central Vietnam

VietNamNet Bridge – At least three people in the central provinces of Quang Tri and Phu Yen died from gas poisoning while they were warming themselves by burning coal. Four others in Quang Nam died from infections induced by the cold weather. Thousands of cattle also died from cold in the last several weeks.

The temperature in central Vietnam, especially in the mountain region, has been 10-11 degrees Celsius for the last two weeks, causing heavy damage to the region.

Four people in Quang Nam province died from cold related illnesses. Three of them including a mother and her baby and a 80-year-old man suffered from strokes while working in the mountain fields. The last victim of the cold weather was a 2-month-old baby.

Nguyen Thi Kim Cuc, Chair of Tra Giang commune in the mountain district of Nam Tra My, Quang Nam, said that this is the coldest year in Quang Nam. The prolonged cold weather has severely affected both people and cattle. So far over 200 cattle have died.

“We told locals not to go to the forest early in the morning and return home early in the afternoon. Children and the elderly must be kept warm,” Cuc said.

The central region also has three people who succumbed to gas poisoning  from burning coal in closed rooms. The victims include a 44-year-old man and his 13-year-old son in Quang Tri province and an old man in Phu Yen province.

A doctor from Phu Yen Polytechnic said that since early winter, the hospital has saved at least eight people who were poisoned by coal gas.

Around 13,000 cows and buffaloes died in northern Vietnam.

Hoang Kim Giao, head of the department of livestock production claimed that numerous fish, shrimps and chickens were continuing to die in this extreme cold. The department has instructed local authorities to assist each household whose have lost cattle with VND2 million.

Giao also warned that the number of dead cattle would continue to rise as harsh weather conditions look like prolonging until Tet. He has ordered local authorities to take all possible measures to protect the cattle from the cold weather.

Severe cold weather to prolong until Tet

The current cold spell in the northern and central regions has stretched for over 18 days and is showing no signs of abating.

The National Hydro Meteorological Forecast Center predicts similar conditions to continue until Tet (Lunar New Year).

Temperatures in the Red River Delta and northern parts of the central region have fallen drastically and in Hanoi, the mercury dropped to 8 degrees Celsius.

The temperature is expected to drop further which might cause schools to close. At present, most hospitals in the region are overloaded with people admitted with cold related illnesses.

Fishing boats in danger

The continuous cold spell was bringing high winds and making the sea extremely rough and unsafe for fishing boats. The winds were reported to be up to 75-88 kilometers per hour on Tuesday.

The rough sea and high waves sank a fishing boat in Sa Huynh waters of the central province of Quang Ngai’s Duc Pho District. Two other boats broke down in Binh Son and Tu Nghia districts. The boats were later towed to the mainland by other fishermen.

According to the Quang Ngai Province border army headquarter; the province has about 112 boats with 2,450 people on board who are still trapped in the sea off Truong Sa (Spratly) Islands and Hoang Sa (Paracel) Islands. Most of them are mainly from Binh Son District and Ly Son Island.

The stormy weather has also rendered several boats idle in Quang Nam, Thua Thien-Hue and Quang Tri provinces.

Fisherman Nguyen Thanh in Phu Vang District  of Thua Thien-Hue  said that the weather was most unusual this year, forcing all boats to stay in the mainland though it was the peak fish season.
